Improved Circulation and It's Overall Benefits . . .
By: Lisa Kitchen
When marketing their trade, massage therapists can only make three claims in relation to the benefits their clients will receive from the massage. These three claims are:
- Increased circulation
- Improved lymphatic function
- Decreased stress
It may not seem like a long list of benefits, but if you consider the extended benefits of those claims, you suddenly have a stronger argument for why massage therapy is so beneficial to overall health.
Benefits of Increased Blood Circulation
Increased circulation of the blood does a number things that will benefit a person's overall health. First, and foremost, oxygen supply to the body is increased by encouraging blood flow toward the heart. Secondly, as muscle and other tissues are manipulated, many toxins, including lactic acid and other metabolic waste, are loosened into the blood flow. Thirdly, as muscles relax, rich oxygenated blood is supplied to those tissues that were otherwise constricted. Each of these benefits combine to create conditions within the body that can help restore health to damaged tissue and increase range of motion.
Improved Lymphatic Function
The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. As toxins, bacteria, and other metabolic waste are released into the circulation of the blood, the lymph fluid carries these toxins away from the muscles, organs, and other tissues so that they may be destroyed and eliminated from the body. By massaging the muscles and encouraging the release of toxins, it also increases the flow of lymph in the body. As a result, the client may experience a strengthened immune system and improved metabolism. In addition, improved lymphatic function will also benefit sleep and a lessening of feelings of anxiety and/or depression.
Decreased Stress
After receiving massage therapy, just the mere thought of 'that shouldn't bother me as much' will decrease a person's stress level. In addition, as discussed above, when circulation is increased and lymphatic function is improved, massage therapy works in a number of ways to decrease stress physically and psychologically. And finally, the act of taking care of oneself can give the client a sense of satisfaction that they are taking care of the only body they have. Self-maintenance is something that we should all endeavor to do more. In this fast paced world, it's very easy to put other concerns before your own. By treating oneself as you would someone else that you love dearly, you are investing in your own self-worth.
So, take a couple of hours to treat yourself. That's what I would do!!
